A Brief History... |
|
Uganda is a tropical country located in East Africa.
It is land locked with Kenya on the west, Sudan on the north, DRC-Congo on the east and Rwanda and Tanzania on the south.
The central part of Uganda is situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, or rather Lake Nalubaale as the local people called it before the British discovered it. For this reason (that it is near the lake) Uganda is colored in the most beautiful shades of green.
Winston Churchill termed Uganda THE PEARL OF AFRICA
The Portuguese and Spanish brought the first seeds of Christianity to Africa in the 15th century. But disease, war and primitive conditions drove many of them home. Four hundred years later the Germans and British arrived, providing schools, hospitals, churches and Bible translators. Christianity in Uganda in the 1800s met with extreme hostility from the then-reigning king and tribal leaders.
The Church of Uganda was born of the blood of her martyrs and of their zeal. The impact of the East African Revival over a period of 60 years has brought new life and evangelical fervency to the Body of Christ in Uganda. The 1970s witnessed terrible persecution under the Obote and Idi Amin regimes. Many smaller denominations were banned, church buildings were destroyed, and a number of Uganda's finest Christian leaders were either murdered or exiled. Progress and stability has been restored with the government of Yoweri Museveni.
Today the country is recovering from the devastation rule of Idi Amin and the onslaught of HIV/AIDS. At one time AIDS had affected 33% of the population-now closer to 3% - 7%. Every household has orphans. 80%+ people are under the age of 30.
